Littlefield was named after rancher George W. Littlefield, who divided his ranch to form a land company after surveys indicated that a railroad line from Santa Fe to Texico would pass through his land. The town became a station for the Panhandle and Santa Fe Railway in 1913. It was incorporated in 1924 and quickly developed as cottonseed oil mills, grain elevators, and irrigated farms were built.
